THIN ICE is part of a series of quilts based around my interest in human impact on the environment. This piece is a representation of the toxic waste that the US Army left buried in a Greenland ice sheet during the Cold War. Secretly known as Project Iceworm, Camp Century's mission was to build a network of nuclear missile launch sites under the ice sheet. The project was abandoned when the ice sheet proved to be too unstable. Left behind in the ice is radioactive waste, PCB's, sewage, and diesel fuel.
